Celebrating Kira Noir on the Pornhub Podcast

This is Kira Noir's world and we're all living in it

By Erika | February 17, 2023 | 5 minutes

Since her debut in 2015, Kira Noir immediately established herself as a household name in the industry. So much so that in 2020 we asked Kira to join our team as an official brand ambassador. Kira’s confidence, sense of humor and commitment to individuality are what caught our perceptive, perverted eyes. Coupled with her dedication to sex positivity and self-expression, two pillars of the Pornhub values, it was an organic fit to have Kira represent our brand.

Kira’s joined us in some of our favorite charitable moments, like the comedic Sextainable JOI to sexily promote environmental sustainability, or the Beesexual campaign with Abella Danger and others to save the bees.

In the time since her debut, Kira’s taken home several awards, but in the adult industry there’s one award that is arguably the most important and a true marker of all around performer excellence . This past January at the AVN Awards, Kira Noir took home the award for Female Performer of the Year, being the first Black woman to win this award since its inception in 1993.

With this win, Kira solidifies her place in the adult lexicon alongside Asa Akira who won it in 2013. Here’s a snippet of their recent convo on the Pornhub Podcast hosted by Asa.

Asa: So AVN Awards follows the AVN convention, which is three or four days, and it's the biggest porn convention, I think, in the world.

Kira: At least for us, yeah. There's never been anything else.

Asa: The award show is on the last night of that. And it's funny that you mentioned you tried to stay really healthy throughout the show because, we joke around, and we call it the “AVN flu” where everyone gets sick at AVN.

Kira: I didn't!

Asa: Me neither! I have two little kids in school, so I'm sick all the  time right now. That's just the phase of life I'm in, and maybe that really built up my immune system because I didn't get sick either, but now I'm like, "Oh, maybe it just, like, didn't go around this year."

But the award show night is always this really dramatic and emotional night, not only because of the awards which is an emotional thing in and of itself, but we go through a lot during the convention, and a lot of us are introverts and we are meeting fans, which... I think you're kind of a super introvert, right?

Kira: I can turn it on and off, thankfully. In my personal life, I have a small circle of friends, and then most nights I'm staying at home. For work stuff, it's not like I can become an entirely different person, but I kind of just jump into this role, and then I can be fine and happy, do all the things, talk to all the people, and the second I'm done, I just want to sleep forever.

Asa: I'm exactly the same. It's so weird. If it's work-related or if it's meeting fans and stuff, I'm super into small talk, being social and meeting new people. Why do you think that is? Why is it more comfortable? Like when I go to a party in my regular life, nothing porn related, I'm totally that person who's not talking to a lot of new people. I kind of lock onto one person and hang out with them the whole night in the corner kind of thing. Why do you think that’s a thing?

Kira: I think that whenever you do porn, you do develop a persona. You can be embarrassed because you have a stain on your shirt, but you're not embarrassed to get gangbanged by five guys and post it on the internet while you're begging for more cum and they're calling you a dirty whore. That's fine because you're doing it in your persona, and it's expected. When people watch it, they want to see that content, so it's all okay. Whenever it's "real life," it's more stressful because you can't edit anything. Whenever I'm doing a porn convention, I can just be happy bubbly Kira, and have fun chatting with people. And that's great. But in normal party situations, I don't know what the fuck anybody wants me to talk about. I don't even know if they want me to talk to them.

Asa: That's a really interesting point. When you show up to a porn convention and you're meeting fans, you already know what version of yourself you want to be or wanna present in that room. You know what the fans are there for and that's part of the deal. I also think there's some level of comfort when I'm at a porn convention or anything porn related, because there's this understanding of, "Okay. We're all a little weird." We do porn, you love porn enough to go to a convention for it. We're all of the same cloth.

Kira: You can talk about weird stuff. Somebody can come up to me and be like, "I love your asshole," and I'm like, "Dude, me too." And it's fine!

Asa: You're not gonna judge me for being this weirdo on the outskirts of society because you might be too. There's kind of a camaraderie in that.

Kira: Yeah.

Asa: I wanna go back to talking about the fact that you are the first Black woman to ever win this award. What does that mean to you?

Kira: It's really bittersweet because as happy as I am to win and as happy as I am to achieve that kind of milestone, it does come with the fact that it took this long for it to happen.

There have been a lot of other amazing black performers who have done incredible work, had the best careers, and really were staples in the porn community at large that didn't get that kind of accolade. So, I feel almost guilty. I'm trying not to and just be happy for myself.

I tweeted about it because I wanted to acknowledge it. Then people started fighting with me and saying, "No, you weren't because this person won, and this person won." Somebody said that it was Midori that was the first black female performer to win. And she was the first Black woman to win an AVN award in 2001 for Best Supporting Actress, but not a Female Performer of the Year. And then somebody else said that Skin did it. And Skin is my fucking idol, she won Urban X Female Performer of the Year.

Asa: That's social media for you, right? You try to have one little nice moment and then someone has to ruin it.

Kira: It's a happy thing, but it's also kind of a sad thing. I'm mostly happy about it, but I feel like for me to be morally right, I have to acknowledge that it does kind of suck that it took this long.

Asa: I definitely get what you're saying. You're right. It's shitty that you're the first, but also congratulations!

Kira: Thank you.
